Colorado legislature shoots down 'assault weapons' ban proposal

Second Amendment supporters in Colorado scored a huge victory this week after a radical leftist attempt to ban "assault weapons" was shot down.

According to JustTheNews, the proposed bill was shot down about as quickly as it was drawn up, failing to even pass out of the Colorado House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

Law-abiding gun owners in the state dodged quite the bullet in the trashing of the bill, as it would have enacted strict anti-gun laws that do virtually nothing to stop gun violence, and instead inflicts the most harm on the rights of gun-owning citizens.

The outlet noted:

House Bill 23-1230, sponsored by Rep. Elisabeth Epps, D-Denver, would have prohibited the manufacturing, importing, purchasing, or selling of an assault weapon, among other restrictions. The bill was postponed indefinitely on an 8-5 vote.

Colorado House Republicans celebrated the win, giving special thanks to the number of voters who expressed their concerns with the bill.

"Let’s get back to actual solutions that address soft-on-crime policies, securing our schools and addressing the mental health crisis facing our state,” the House GOP wrote after the bill was taken down. "Unfortunately, the session is almost over and Colorado House Democrats still haven’t gotten serious about our crime problem."

The news was widely celebrated across social media, even by some law enforcement officials.

"As your elected Sheriff, I testified along with five other Sheriffs to oppose HB23-1230 “Prohibit Assault Weapons in Colorado”. I am just as disgusted as everyone else about mass shootings. However, this bill would make commonly owned firearms illegal to purchase, sell or transfer. We must not compromise individual liberties under the guise of safety. Criminals don't obey gun laws," Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly tweeted.

Colorado Democrats came out with their typical talking points after the bill was postponed, but state Republicans reiterated that gun control laws isn't the answer to the gun violence epidemic.

"We just have to focus on mental health," said state Rep. Ryan Armagost, who told the committee he sought assistance for his mental health. "I've heard testimony tonight about how it's not going to be a one-visit thing. No, there's many ways to address mental health. Every person is different."

He's exactly right. The problem is a lack of mental health treatment capability and continuing to let our schools, churches, hospitals, and grocery stores remain "soft" targets, which is why a vast majority of mass shootings take place in such venues.

Hopefully, Colorado Republicans do not become complacent in their victory this week, as Democrats will undoubtedly keep up the pressure campaign to get more anti-gun laws passed, one way or another.
