College football star Stetson Bennett arrested for public intoxication

Fox News reports that Stetson Bennett, the well-known former college football quarterback for Georgia, was arrested over the weekend.

Bennett, 25, is now facing a charge of public intoxication, and concerns are growing about how this may or may not affect his future.

The arrest of Bennett took place in Dallas, Texas, on Sunday. Police told the local outlet WFAA that Bennett was arrested around 6 a.m. at the 1600 block of Tribeca Way in Old East Dallas.

Authorities were dispatched to the area, according to the outlet, after receiving reports of a man banging on doors. Then, when they arrived, they found Bennett inside of a gated area walking around.

In the ensuing conversation between the police and Bennett, Bennett, according to the police report, claimed that his friend lived at the particular location where he was found. Bennett said that he had been unable to contact the unidentified friend by phone.

But, while speaking with Bennett, the police are said to have determined that Bennett was intoxicated. And so, they decided to place him under arrest.

Bennett was then taken to the local detention center, and he was held there until about 11 a.m. No other details have been provided about the situation.

But, Bennett's attorney, Todd Shapiro, did put out a statement on the matter, explaining that Bennett was in Dallas, Texas, in order to train for the National Football League (NFL) combine, and that, when police found him on Sunday morning, he was trying to enter his friend's apartment.

It is not clear what, if anything, is going to come of all of this from a legal perspective. But, what might be a much bigger issue for Bennett is how this might affect his future in football.

Bennett is well-known for leading the Georgia Bulldogs to back-to-back national championships. Bennett also has been a Heisman Trophy finalist and a Manning Award winner - the award given to the top college football quarterback.

Now, Bennett has his sights set on the NFL. He will enter the NFL draft in April. And, even without the public intoxication charge, he, according to the experts, is facing some issues - such as the fact that he is only 5'10" tall.

But, the public intoxication issue might make things worse for Bennett, especially because this may not be the first incident of its kind.

The New York Post reports, "Bennett went on 'Good Morning America' after Georgia defeated Alabama in 2022 and struggled to keep his eyes open, with many on the internet commenting that he seemed hungover from celebrating." Then, in 2023, following the victory over TCU, Bennett skipped the national championship press conference, and the teammate who filled in for him laughed when asked how Bennett felt that morning.

Bennett is currently expected to only be a third-round pick in the NFL draft.
