A new CNN report has revealed the increase in violent crime associated with the “defund the police” movement may be strong weakness for Democrats during the midterm elections, calling the topic “kryptonite.”
In an article entitled “This could be Democrats’ kryptonite in 2022,” CNN editor-at-large Chris Cillizza wrote, “Republicans plotting to retake the majority in the House and Senate next November may well have found the issue that could make that happen: Crime.”
Cillizza cited, “A recent Washington Post-ABC News poll showed that there was reason for the worry in the White House. Just 39% approved of how Biden has handled the issue of crime so far in his presidency while 48% disapproved.”
He summarized the issue well in the words, “Liberal Democrats and minority voters believe strongly that significant police reform is required. But in swing districts where the House majority will be decided, voters are far less willing to support policies like defunding the police or even reallocating resources devoted to crime fighting.”
This week, several Republican House members tweeted the House Republicans image called “Welcome to Joe Biden’s America.” The Fox News graphic displayed a surge in shootings across major U.S. cities all led by Democrats.
Tennessee Rep. Chuck Fleischmann tweeted, “Everywhere police departments have been defunded & downsized, violent crime has skyrocketed. Yet, Democrats are still ignoring this crisis.”

These words may be the downfall of Democrats seeking to retain power in the House and Senate during the 2022 midterms, offering conservatives another chance to show if they can make a difference on this key issue.
