'Clear misconduct and intent' claimed by lawyer in Kari Lake case

A lawyer for Kari Lake is arguing there was malicious conduct in the counting of votes during her run as a GOP gubernatorial candidate in Arizona.

Attorney Kurt Olsen made the case during opening arguments on Friday before the Maricopa County Superior Court.

The statement

Olsen claimed that there was “clear misconduct and intent” in the handling of the votes based on new evidence.

He added: “This evidence supports our allegation that the election was rigged.”

The details

"Olsen said there were four new issues since the trial took place in December. First, he said the new evidence refutes the testimony of Maricopa County Elections Director Scott Jarrett regarding problems with ballots printing," the Arizona Sun-Times reported.

"The tabulators failed to recognize many of the ballots on Election Day because they were 19-inch ballots printed on 20-inch paper," it added.

Speculation has continued to swirl about Lake's future following the controversial election for governor that led to Katie Hobbs winning for Democrats.

"If for some reason we don't get a fair outcome in our election, I will run for Senate, most likely," Lake has stated, a move that could put her against Independent Kyrsten Sinema and Democratic candidate Ruben Gallego.

If the race becomes a three-way race, the split could work to Lake's advantage in helping her become the state's next Republican senator.

Some have even speculated that Lake could run as vice president alongside former President Donald Trump if he becomes the party's nominee.

The ongoing dispute about Maricopa County's voting practices extends back to 2020 when the state was among those that took a lengthy process to report votes and did so under some unanswered questions. Lake hopes to get to the bottom of the mystery and somehow vindicate herself as the real winner in the state in an unlikely move that is perhaps better in setting up her future political activities.
