In one of the oddest and most ridiculous displays of COVID-19 pandemic mandate confusion, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, city health leaders voted to rescind a city-wide mask mandate that they had just put in place four days prior.
According to Breitbart, the city’s Board of Health voted to reverse an indoor mask mandate just days after it had become the first major U.S. city to reimpose such mandates, which have proven to be wildly unpopular with most Americans, politics aside.
While not much in the way of explanation was provided by the city as to why it had a sudden change of heart, city health officials released a statement citing lower hospitalization rates and a leveling off in cases, which was data available to them when they made the initial call to reinstate the mandate.
“Due to a recent leveling-off of case counts and a decrease in COVID-19 hospitalizations in the City, masks are strongly recommended, but are no longer required in public indoor settings, with the exception of healthcare and congregate settings,” the Philadelphia Health Department said.
The real story likely involves the extreme resistance and pushback from not only residents of the city who are sick and tired of the ineffective, confusing mask mandates, but the small businesses that have suffered from over two years of various mandates that have killed off more businesses than one can count.

Health Commissioner Dr. Cheryl Bettigole, in one of the most asinine suggestions to date, said that having four days of masking indoors somehow fended off an outbreak in the city, which was clearly an attempt to distract from the sheer humiliation of the city health department being beaten back by an outraged general public.
It’s especially ridiculous to make such a suggestion since science clearly states that cloth masks, which is what 99.9% of the population wears, are virtually completely ineffective in controlling the spread of the COVID-19 virus — a fact admitted by none other than Dr. Anthony Fauci himself.
This particular instance of announcing and then rescinding a pandemic mandate goes to show that with enough public pressure, city and state leaders can be beaten. Thankfully, that’s happening on a much wider scale now.
