Chuck Schumer claims Fox News the "number one cause" of "erosion in our democracy"

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called Fox News the "number one cause" in the "erosion in our democracy," Breitbart reported. The New York Democrat made these claims on CNN's "The Lead" Thursday.

Schumer was discussing the $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox News for its reporting on the Dominion Voting Systems following the 2020 presidential election, The Hill reported. The company claimed Fox News knowingly spread false and harmful information about its product.

Regardless of the merits of the case, Schumer used it to pounce on the right-leaning network and spew platitudes. “The threat to our democracy may be greater than it ever has been before because when people doubt that the elections are for real, democracy is on edge," he said.

"After all, the wellspring, the heart of our democracy, is that we trust the elections. You know, I worry that if this erodes, our democracy will erode, and my children and grandchildren will not grow up in the grand democracy that gave me, the son of an exterminator, the opportunities that I have had," Schumer claimed.

"What caused this? Number one was Fox News and their commentators spreading the big lie day after day, night after night, hour after hour, week after week, year after year," Schumer said.

"They’re the number one cause that there is such erosion in our democracy," the New York Democrat added. Schumer continued to pour it on thick in his hatred of media that is not as biased or left-leaning as CNN.

"It’s something that I feel. I love this democracy. We line up every November for 200 years and change. We go vote. And the next day, everyone abided by the election, whether we won or lost, even remember Bush v. Gore," Schumer said.

"And now, all of a sudden, you have this network spreading the lies, doing it very effectively and making a third of the people, two-thirds of the Republican Party, believe this democracy ain’t on the level. You know, when you study dictatorship, this is the beginning of the end," the New York Democrat dramatically claimed.

"I don’t think it’ll be that here because the American roots of democracy are strong. But I worry about it, and there’s a demand to push back," he added.

It's fitting that Schumer brought up the 2000 presidential race between former Vice President Al Gore and George W. Bush. When Bush narrowly won after a legal battle in Florida, many Democrats, including Gore's own wife, insisted that the election was stolen.

The same happened in 2016 when President Donald Trump beat former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in an upset win. In fact, 67 Democrats boycotted his inauguration, claiming that his victory was "illegitimate."

Clinton wasn't alone in this assertion. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are both on the record disputing the results of the 2016 election as recently as 2019, though Schumer doesn't seem to have a problem with that.

Then in 2018, when Democrat Stacey Abrams lost the Georgia governor's race, she refused to concede on the grounds that the election was unfair. She claimed it was an "erosion of our democracy" because, after all, the election must have been rigged if she lost.

Schumer only believes Democracy is under threat when Republicans take issue with how an election is decided. If nothing else, Fox News has forced these hypocrites into the spotlight with their partisan claims.
