Chinese TikTok engineers accessed nonpublic US data: Report

There have long been accusations that the popular app TikTok has been used by communist China to spy on Americans and the troves of data they produce on a daily basis, though the company has vehemently denied such accusations.

However, according to the Washington Examiner, TikTok engineers in China might have had essentially unfettered access to U.S. user data during a period ranging from September 2021 through January 2022. If true, it would completely contradict previous statements from the company, assuring the public that such data was safe.

The report that engineers in China had such access was originally published by Buzzfeed, which said it had taken “statements from TikTok employees across 80 internal meetings” to that effect.

TikTok spokeswoman Maureen Shanahan released a statement to Buzzfeed to counter the bombshell report.

“We know we’re among the most scrutinized platforms from a security standpoint, and we aim to remove any doubt about the security of U.S. user data,” Shanahan said.

She added: “That’s why we hire experts in their fields, continually work to validate our security standards, and bring in reputable, independent third parties to test our defenses.”

The controversy surrounding access to U.S. user data isn’t new for the company, as it nearly faced a complete ban in the United States under President Donald Trump for similar reasons, though the former president backed off a complete ban of the app at the last minute, presumably after assurances were made.

“For TikTok to knowingly allow the Chinese Communist Party to access American user data is unacceptable, and a complete betrayal of our trust,” Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) said of the situation.
