Chinese military drills continue following Pelosi’s Taiwan trip

The situation between China and Taiwan continues to escalate.

According to the Washington Examiner, Taiwan on Saturday reported that the recent military drills held by China appeared to simulate an attack on Taiwan.Β

This follows House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) recent trip to Taiwan, which she made in a show of solidarity with Taiwan against the territorial claims of China.

Pelosi’s trip infuriated China, which has responded by issuing sanctions against Pelosi and her family and by launching military exercises surrounding Taiwan. Taiwan, on Saturday, provided details about the extent of these so-called exercises.

The Examiner reports that multiple Chinese aircraft and warships, during these exercises, crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait. Also, four drones, believed to be Chinese, were detected over the waters of the Kinmen island group, Lieyu Island, and Beiding Island.

This was all on top of the ballistic missiles that were fired by China in the direction of Taiwan directly after Pelosi’s departure.

Taiwan’s military was forced to respond to all of this. According to the Examiner, “Taiwan’s armed forces issued an alert, dispatched air and naval patrols around the island, and activated land-based missile systems.”

National Security Council’s strategic communications coordinator John Kirby believes that China is trying to use Pelosi’s trip to establish a new “status quo” in the area.

Kirby said that the “United States is prepared for what Beijing chooses to do.”
