California approves ban on trucks with internal combustion engines effective in 2036

California regulators approved a ban on trucks with internal combustion engines that would take effect by 2036, the Daily Caller reported. The measure approved Friday is part of the mandate that all vehicles be zero-emissions by 2042.

As with most terrible ideas, this regulation comes from unelected bureaucrats California Air Resources Board. It's part of a broader Advanced Clean Fleet initiative that will phase out traditional vehicle engines for local and state fleets.

By 2024, at least 50% of new government vehicles must be zero emissions, increasing to 100% by 2027. It will also create a registry for drayage trucks that often perform short runs to haul cargo from sea or air freight before loads are shipped further inland.

This rule is even stricter than the state law President Joe Biden’s Environmental Protection Agency approved that would slash the sale of diesel trucks in half with a target date 0f 2035. The board approved train emissions limits just the day before this newest change.

Critics believe this could cause significant problems with the supply chain when combined. After all, necessities like food and medicine have to reach their final destination either by road or rail, and these new rules will be another hurdle.

"After crippling our supply chains with the disastrous #AB5, Sacramento wants to go even further, completely banning diesel trucks," Rep. Michelle Steel (R-CA) tweeted ahead of the vote. "This backwards attack on truckers will only serve to further harm our economy."

One of the main problems with the rule is that it essentially mandates the switch to electric vehicles. Currently, the infrastructure is simply not in place for charging stations nationwide.

American Trucking Association Environmental Affairs Director Mike Tunnell believes it would be better to "see the technology be proven and work" before implementing such a sweeping change. The association's senior vice president Chris Shimoda believes it will be an unprecedented nightmare.

"The amount of chaos and dysfunction that is going to be created by this rule will be like nothing we’ve ever seen before," Shimoda predicted. "The likelihood that it is going to fail pretty spectacularly is very high. It’s very unfortunate," Shimoda added.

Still, CARB's transportation division head Sydney Vergis defended the move stating that it "accounts for the vehicles’ suitability for electrification." Environmental attorney Paul Cort, who represents Earthjustice, believes that the move toward electric vehicles is "advanced" while admitting there are "constraints" to charging these vehicles without the infrastructure already in place.

Notably, the Golden State has approved these rules to mandate electric vehicles even as California's grid can't handle the current demands on it. During a late-summer heat wave, residents were asked not to charge their electric vehicles during certain hours to prevent blackouts, the New York Post reported.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise pointed out the absurdity of this fact in an August tweet. "California is now telling people to 'avoid using large appliances and charging electric vehicles' from 4-9pm," the Louisiana Republican wrote.

"This from the same state that’s going to force everyone to buy electric cars by 2035. This is what Democrat control looks like—and they want it nationwide. What a joke," Scalise said.

The technology, the infrastructure, and the financial incentives just aren't there for a total switch to electric-powered vehicles. However, petty tyrants like California Gov. Gavin Newsom and his henchmen will impose it from the top anyway, even if it means a logistical and economic nightmare.
