According to CBS affiliate station KCAL in Los Angeles, Compton, California City Councilman Isaac Galvan – together with five other individuals – was charged last week with election fraud stemming from a scheme designed to help him hold onto his seat in what turned out to be a very close runoff race.
As the Washington Examiner noted, Galvan faced arraignment Friday on a single count of conspiracy to commit election fraud as well as one count of attempted bribery intended to influence the outcome of an election.
According to officials from the office of Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon, the other individuals charged in relation to the case against Galvin are former city council candidate Jace Dawson, Kimberley Chaouch, Barry Reed, Toni Morris, and Reginald Streeter, all facing allegations of conspiracy to commit the aforementioned election fraud.
Prosecutors contend that the defendants launched a conspiracy that resulted in Galvan’s paper-thin margin of victory against rival Andre Spicer back in June, one which saw Morris, Reed, Chaouch, and Streeter all registering to vote using the address of Dawson’s residence within Compton, even though they actually lived elsewhere.
The fraudulent registrations were not the only issues identified by prosecutors, according to the Examiner, as it is also claimed that Galvan made an attempt to bribe an employee of the registrar’s office on the night of the election, doing so while that individual was tallying votes.
As local L.A. outlet KTLA reported, Friday saw not guilty pleas entered by both Galvan and Dawson, and the other defendants are slated to be arraigned at an undetermined future date.
In announcing the charges, Gascon declared, “Elections are the cornerstone of our democratic nation. We must do everything in our power to protect the integrity of the electorate process and to ensure that elections are free and fair.”
“The people of Los Angeles County expect and deserve a government that is free of political corruption at every level,” Gascon added.
And to think that all this time, Democrats such as Gascon have been bending over backwards to assure Americans that election fraud is essentially an urban legend and going out of their way to smear anyone who dared suggest otherwise. Go figure.
