Eric Wahl believes that his brother was killed, the Daily Wire reports. 

Eric Wahl's brother is Grant Wahl, the 49-year-old U.S. journalist who collapsed and died in Qatar while covering the World Cup quarterfinal match between Argentina and the Netherlands.

The cause of Wahl's death remains unclear. Reports from those who were in the same press box as Wahl at the time of his collapse reveal that Wahl was "laughing at a joke we saw on Twitter" just before collapsing.

As stated, Eric Wahl believes that foul play was involved in his brother's death, and, to understand Wahl's claim, one needs to take a look at the context in which his brother died.

Not long before Grant Wahl died, he made international headlines for wearing clothing in support of the LGBTQ community.

The New York Post explains the significance of Wahl's decision, reporting, "homosexuality is illegal in Qatar and though assurances were given that LGBT fans would be accepted, Qatar seems keen to suppress discussion of the issue."

In fact, Qatar actually detained Wahl for wearing the pro-LGBT shirt, and it released him after about a half-hour.

Eric Wahl recently released a statement revealing that his brother wore the LGBT shirt on his behalf, and he expressed his belief that his brother was killed because he was healthy and had received death threats, presumably for wearing the shirt.

He said:

My name is Eric Wahl. I live in Seattle, Washington. I am Grant Wahl’s brother. I’m gay, I’m the reason he wore the rainbow shirt to the World Cup. My brother was healthy. He told me he received death threats. I do not believe my brother just died. I believe he was killed and I just beg for any help.

For the time being, though, we simply don't know the reason for Wahl's death.

A spokesperson for the Qatari Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy has put out a statement on the matter.

"We are deeply saddened by the death of the U.S. journalist Grant Wahl," the spokesperson said.

The statement continues:

Grant was known for his enormous love of football and was in Qatar to cover his eighth FIFA World Cup. He fell ill in the Lusail Stadium media tribune during last night’s quarter-final match between Argentina v Netherlands. He received immediate emergency medical treatment on-site, which continued as he was transferred by ambulance to Hamad General Hospital.

The statement concludes with the committee offering its "deepest condolences" to Wahl's family and colleagues. The committee also says that it is "in touch with the U.S. Embassy and relevant local authorities" in order to make arrangements to return Wahl's body "in accordance with the family’s wishes."
