NFL star Drew Brees sparked national backlash for standing up for the American flag on Wednesday, causing Fox Sports 1 broadcaster Shannon Sharpe to announce that he believes it’s time for Brees to retire.
Brees shocked the nation on Wednesday by pushing back against the rampant anti-American sentiment dominating the news cycle, saying that he will “never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America or our country.”
He criticized fellow NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s widely lauded decision to take a knee during the national anthem at football games in 2016, saying that “is everything right with our country right now? No, it is not. We still have a long way to go. But I think what you do by standing there and showing respect to the flag with your hand over your heart, is it shows unity.”
Liberal commentators exploded in rage over Brees’ incendiary comments, forcing him to walk back the statement only hours later.
That wasn’t good enough though. Sharpe remarked on Thursday that “He issued an apology … but it’s meaningless because the guys know he spoke his heart the very first time around,” Sharpe said on Wednesday.
“I don’t know what Drew’s going to do, but he probably should just go ahead and retire now. He will never be the same.”
The New Orleans Saints quarterback bent the knee to the outraged media, issuing a mea culpa saying: “I would like to apologize to my friends, teammates, the City of New Orleans, the black community, NFL community and anyone I hurt,” continuing that his original comments were “not an accurate reflection of my heart or my character.”
