Brazilian Congressman Daniel Silveira sentenced to eight years in prison for criticizing Brazilian Supreme Federal Tribunal

Americans sometimes feel the attack on free speech will lead to tyranny. In other places around the world, it’s already happening — and often with the same rationale as the left uses here.

A conservative Brazilian politician was removed from office and sentenced to more than eight years in prison for posting a video on YouTube critical of the Supreme Federal Tribunal, Breitbart reported. Freshman Congressman Daniel Silveira, a former military police officer, was democratically elected.

The SFT, Brazil’s highest court, found Silveria guilty of “intent to impede the free exercise of [judicial] powers” and “judicial coercion.” Silveria has lost his political position and will have to pay 212,000 Brazilian reais or about $45,000 in U.S. dollars.

He was also as accused of inciting violence and straining relations between the STF and armed forces. Those claims are notable considering the court is largely staffed by supporters of former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was the socialist leader.

Silveira said in the video in question that the SFT had “no character, no scruples, no morals.” Moreover, Silveira accused STF Minister Alexandre de Moraes of torturing prisoners who supported conservative President Jair Bolsonaro.

It’s known that de Moraes is behind police violence against other YouTube creators, comedians, and those who create so-called “fake news.” De Moraes doesn’t believe that his country’s laws protect such speech, however.

“The Constitution does not guarantee freedom of expression as a protective shield for the practice of illicit activities, for hate speech, for speech against democracy, for speech against institutions,” de Moraes asserted. “This is the limit of the perverted exercise of non-existent freedom of expression.”

“Freedom of expression exists for the manifestation of opposing opinions, jokes, satires, for wrong opinions, but not for criminal opinions, hate speech, an attack on the democratic state of law,” de Moraes claimed.

Tyrants often feel that freedom of speech only protects their viewpoint and ideas they want to hear. However, the purpose of such a right is that it also protects people who express unpopular opinions — but someone should tell that to the American left.
