Border Protection Commissioner Chris Magnus refuses to resign

Border Protection Commissioner Chris Magnus refused to resign despite Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas demanding it, the Washington Times reported. Magnus has served in the position since being confirmed last December.

"I expressed to him that I felt there was no justification for me to resign when I still cared deeply about the work I was doing and felt that that work was focused on the things I was hired to do in the first place,” Magnus said. However, Magnus is unpopular inside and outside of the government.

Border Patrol agents are wary of competence because he has yet to quell the influx of illegal immigrants. At the same time, open-borders advocates are unhappy with Magnus and the Biden administration supporting some Trump-era policies that crack down on the problem.

Illegal immigrants have been flooding the U.S.-Mexico border in record numbers since President Joe Biden took office. Although the problem was created before Magnus took over, he hasn't successfully helped the situation either.

Mayorkas asked for Magnus' resignation ahead of next week's Capitol Hill hearing, where the secretary will likely be grilled on the situation at the border. Many top-level leadership positions remain vacant as the situation continues to spiral out of control, but ousting Magnus was likely an attempt at showing movement toward a solution.

However, it isn't just the crisis at the border that had Magnus on the chopping block. The official has been beleaguered by problems with his past professional conduct and current job performance, Fox News reported.

Magnus was at the center of a sexual harassment and retaliation case from his time as a Richmond, California, police chief. The case was settled out of court in 2017, but it casts a shadow over his current woes.

Last month, Magnus reportedly was falling asleep during important meetings, and an unnamed official accused him of not being properly committed to his job. "He’s not in the game," a Biden administration official said.

"Every time there’s a meeting, and he’s in it, we’ll get to a conclusion, and Magnus will have some sidebar issue that he wants to raise, and we’re all like "What the f--- is that about?'" Magnus has also made enemies within for partially buying into a narrative about Border Patrol agents mistreating Haitian immigrants.

CBP conducted an investigation after a media narrative emerged suggesting agents were whipping illegal immigrants based on photos showing the enforcement officials on horseback wielding long reins, the Associated Press reported. Its report released in July concluded that it was an "unnecessary use of force" even without proof that they used whips.

"We’re gonna learn from this incident, and we’ll find a way to do better," Magnus said about the report. "Not everyone’s going to like all the findings, but the investigation was comprehensive and fair."

Mayorkas will have to fire Magnus if he wishes for him to leave, but that won't solve the problems that have been developing due to Biden's awful mishandling of border policy. The situation at the border is out of control, and it appears the problem comes from the very top.
