Book reveals that Trump apologized to Sen. Cruz after 2016 election insults

According to the Washington Examiner, a new book reveals that former President Donald Trump apologized to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) for insults that Trump made about Cruz’s wife during the 2016 Republican presidential primaries.

The book comes from Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign manager. It is titled, “Political Prisoner: Persecuted, Prosecuted, but Not Silenced,” and it will be released next month.

The Guardian has obtained a copy of the book, and it reports Manafort as writing, “on his own initiative, Trump did apologize for saying some of the things he said about Cruz, which was unusual for Trump.”

What makes it unusual is that Trump has developed a reputation for refusing to apologize. Nonetheless, that is exactly what Trump did, and he did so, according to Manafort, in person to Cruz and Cruz’s family.

In case the reader either doesn’t remember or doesn’t know what happened, Trump, during the 2016 presidential primaries, went after Cruz and Cruz’s family. Trump questioned whether Cruz could be the next president if he was born in Canada, he suggested that Cruz’s father was linked to the assassination of former President John F. Kennedy, and he implied that Cruz’s wife, Heidi Cruz, was ugly.

The situation continued to escalate during the campaign trail, and it led to Cruz calling Trump a “sniveling coward.”

However, according to Manafort, Trump, before the Republican convention that was held in Cleveland in July, met with Cruz and Cruz’s family and apologized to them, face-to-face. Trump also told Cruz, according to Manafort, that “he considered him an ally, not an enemy, and that he believed they could work together when Trump was president.”

Cruz, for his part, said that he would work with Trump but that he would not endorse Trump for president because his supporters did not want him to.

It’s quite the backstory to the 2016 rivalry between Trump and Cruz. Neither individual has commented on it.

Trump showed his staunch character by apologizing and I am pleased with that apology. That is a plus in my book.

It takes a big man to apologize and admit his mistake. There are others who need to follow Trump’s example. Good for Trump!
