Body found in Laundrie search adds more mystery to Gabby Petito case

The story of Gabby Petito’s death and the search for her fugitive fiance, Brian Laundrie, may have come to a tragic end. However, questions still remain as to what happened in the first place.

Human remains were found in an environment where Laundrie was thought to be headed when he left his parents’ house on Sept. 13, the Washington Examiner reported. Laundrie had been on the lam since two days after Petito was reported missing by her parents.

Laundrie and Petito had embarked on a road excursion to tour national parks out west. However, the 23-year-old returned to the Florida home he shared with his parents and Petito on Sept. 1 without her and driving the van they had been sharing.

Investigators have yet to identify the remains they found. However, the body was located near personal possessions belonging to Laundrie including a notebook and backpack.

Steven Bertolino, attorney for the Laundrie family, made a statement to the press on behalf of Brian’s parents, Chris and Robert Laundrie. The couple had embarked on their own search that was apparently fruitful.

“Chris and Roberta Laundrie went to the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park this morning to search for Brian,” Bertolini said Wednesday. “The FBI and NPPD were informed last night of Brian’s parents’ intentions and they met Chris and Roberta there this morning,” he said.

“After a brief search off a trail that Brian frequented some articles belonging to Brian were found,” Bertolino noted. “As of now, law enforcement is conducting a more thorough investigation of that area,” the attorney said.

The medical examiner was called to the area where the remains were found. However, this raises more questions about Brian Laundrie’s possible death and his involvement in a case already shrouded in mystery.

Petito’s body had been found Sept. 19 in Utah in the Bridger-Teton National Forest where the couple had been touring. Her cause of death was ruled strangulation, but authorities couldn’t question Brian Laundrie as he’d already skipped town by then.

This whole awful situation has been a series of twists and turns. This may be the last of them if it turns out to be Brian Laundrie’s body, however.
