Body cam footage from Paul Pelosi attack is revealed

Body camera footage from a police officer who responded to the attack on Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), was shown in court on Wednesday, according to the New York Times.

A preliminary hearing took place on Wednesday to determine whether or not there is enough evidence against the suspect, David DePape, for the case to go to trial. Accordingly, several pieces of evidence were presented, including the body camera footage.

The local outlet KRON4 reports:

The prosecutor played a 15-second video clip from an officer’s body worn camera. The body camera recorded the front door opening, the hammer attack, and DePape being tackled and arrested. Reporters in the courtroom gallery could only hear (not see) the video because the TV monitor was facing toward the judge.

The footage begins with a police officer saying to DePape, "Good morning, what's going on man?" to which DePape replies, "Everything's good."

Next, the officer asks DePape to "drop the hammer" "Uh nope," DePape responds, and then a struggle breaks out between DePape and Pelosi over the hammer. The officer can next be heard saying, "oh s***," presumably after DePape struck Pelosi with the hammer.

KRON4 reports,

The situation turned from calm to chaotic in 2 seconds. One officer charged at DePape and tackled him to the ground. Paul Pelosi was unconscious, facedown on the ground, and in a pool of blood.

Another piece of evidence that was presented on Wednesday was the 911 call that Pelosi made after DePape had broken into his house.

Nothing took place during the call that hasn't already been reported. Pelosi, during the call, attempts to alert the 911 dispatcher to what is going on without upsetting DePape, who, apparently, was standing close by - close enough, in fact, to, at one point, tell the 911 dispatcher that he is "a friend of theirs."

The call ends with Pelosi telling the dispatcher that DePape is telling him "to get the hell off the phone."

Another key piece of evidence that was heard on Wednesday was the testimony of San Francisco Police Department Lt. Carla Hurley. Hurley, shortly after the attack, interviewed DePape on  Oct. 28, 2022, and interviewed Paul Pelosi at the hospital on Oct. 30, 2022.

Pelosi, according to Hurley, explained the events leading up to when he was knocked unconscious after being struck by DePape with the hammer. Pelosi explains how he was woken up by DePape, how DePape wanted to talk to Nancy Pelosi, how DePape had a hammer and zip ties, how DePape had threatened him, and more.

During her interview with DePape, Hurley actually secured DePape's confession, which was also presented in court. DePape explained how he broke in, how he, at one point, prevented Pelosi from escaping to an elevator, and more. DePape also admitted that he had other targets, besides Nancy Pelosi, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), Hunter Biden, actor Tom Hanks, and others.

DePape explained his motivation, saying:

The lies are insane. People in Washington. It originates with Hillary. Honestly, day in and day out, the person on TV lying every day was (Nancy) Pelosi. It’s f****** insane the crime spree the Democrats have been on, persecuting the rival campaign . . . Yes Trump. (The Democrats) go from one crime to another crime. It’s a whole f****** four years. It’s unacceptable.

At the end of the hearing, the judge did determine that there was enough evidence to proceed with the trial. DePape stands accused of a number of crimes, including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, attacking a family member of a public official, and elder abuse. DePape has pled "not guilty."
