Bill Maher: Biden’s energy strategy has him ‘begging’ Saudi Arabia for oil

After a fair bit of confusion about his travel plans, President Joe Biden is slated to visit the Middle East next month for a trip that will include a stop in Saudi Arabia, and according to comedian and political commentator Bill Maher, the entire situation smacks of disgraceful “begging,” as Breitbart reports.

The remarks came on Friday’s episode of Maher’s HBO program Real-Time, and the host did not hold back when it came to criticizing the White House’s approach to American energy.

Maher’s remarks came in the wake of remarks Biden made last weekend indicating that it was still uncertain whether he would indeed head to Saudi Arabia, only to state moments later that while he was indeed planning to go, the trip was not for the purpose of seeking concessions on oil production amid skyrocketing gas prices here at home.

“It happens to be a larger meeting taking place in Saudi Arabia. That’s the reason I’m going,” Biden said, according to The Hill, adding, “[a]nd it has to do with national security for them, for Israelis…it has to do with much larger issues than having to do with the energy piece.”

Back in 2019, Biden pledged to turn Saudi Arabia into a global “pariah” over its alleged involvement in the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, as CBS News noted, a claim that many say looks less than credible in hindsight, not unlike the president’s assertion that energy concerns are by no means on the top of his agenda for the upcoming meeting.

Discussing the impending trip, Maher expressed frustration over the administration’s early prioritization of green energy before suitable replacements were widely ready, noting that when that happens, “[countries] wind up going back to even worse fossil fuels” such as coal, and the U.S. ends up with a president who must now play the supplicant to a dark regime.

Noting that almost as soon as he took office, Biden took steps toward fulfilling a promise to end oil drilling on federal lands and exacerbated short- and middle-term domestic supply problems, Maher then slammed the apparent and egregious turnabout from the White House when it comes to engaging with the Middle Eastern kingdom.

“We said, Saudi Arabia, go f*** yourself, you killed a journalist and now, Biden is going over there, hat in hand, begging them for oil. Because people want their gas,” Maher observed.

Though White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre argued that viewing the meeting through such a lens “is simply wrong and a misunderstanding of both the complexity of that issue,” as CBS News noted, she also had no choice but to admit what was obvious to all, namely, “[o]f course, we discuss energy with the Saudi government, as we do with oil producers all around the world,” indirectly – but clearly – validating Maher’s point.
