Bill Clinton's secret service agent gets involved in an 'altercation'

ABC News reports that one of the secret service officers assigned to former President Bill Clinton was recently recalled after he was involved in "an off-duty altercation."

The incident took place in Bulgaria.

Last month, the Clinton Foundation announced that Clinton, in May, would make a trip to Bulgaria for his Clinton Global Initiative (CGI).

The announcement read:

Next month, President Clinton will travel to Bulgaria for a convening of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), bringing together leaders from across private and public sectors to tackle pressing global challenges. The meeting in Sofia on May 12, held in partnership with Kiril Domuschiev, President and CEO of Huvepharma and Chairman of the Confederation of Employers and Industrialists in Bulgaria (KRIB), will include the launch of a new Commitment to Action to boost investment in food security, education, and climate solutions.

According to the Secret Service, however, one of the agents assigned to protect Clinton on this trip ran into some trouble.

A Secret Service spokesperson told ABC, "On May 10, a Secret Service officer assigned to support protective functions on an overseas trip to Sofia, Bulgaria, was recalled to the United States by the Secret Service after an off-duty altercation with hotel staff."

Specifics about the altercation remain unreported at the time of this writing.

But, the incident apparently occurred before Clinton arrived in Bulgaria. And, a second agent had to be recalled as well.

The secret service spokesperson continued, "A second employee who witnessed this incident was also recalled. The individuals were removed prior to the arrival of the protectee, and our Office of Professional Responsibility has opened an internal investigation into the incident."

The Secret Service has released its own statement on the matter.

The agency said that it has "extremely strict codes of conduct governing employee behavior and should this investigation reveal any policy violations or misconduct, individuals will face disciplinary action."

For now, the agency said that "all employees involved in this incident have been placed on administrative leave and access to Secret Service sites, facilities and computer systems has been suspended pending the results of this investigation."

This is at least the second time that the secret service made its way into the news this week.

On May 16, CBS's Catherine Herridge reported:

The Secret Service has launched an investigation into how an unidentified man entered National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan's residence while agents were on duty last month and slipped through robust security system.
