It’s becoming more clear that the government illegally spied on former President Donald Trump’s campaign in 2016. Despite this happening while former President Barack Obama was still in office, it seems he won’t face any serious scrutiny.
Former Attorney General William Barr reiterated an early prediction that Obama would not be charged in connection to special counsel John Durham’s probe into Russiagate, the Washington Examiner reported. Barr made this claim Friday on Fox Business News.
Durham’s probe has already uncovered the dubious origins of the information used to justify an investigation into supposed Trump’s ties with the Kremlin. So far, only lower-level players in the scheme have faced any charges.
“If he can prove criminal acts beyond a regional doubt, he’ll bring the case,” Barr said about the possibility of Durham’s ongoing investigation roping in Obama or President Joe Biden, who was the vice president at the time. “I don’t suspect that they’re going to involve someone at Obama’s level,” he told added.
Barr has conceded that the narrative that Trump had colluded with the Russians to get elected in 2016 was a “manufactured scandal.” Still, he is doubtful that Obama and Biden will face any charges since their involvement, if any, can’t be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
“There’s a difference between an abuse of power and a federal crime,” Barr had said in May 2020 while still serving in the Trump administration. “Not every abuse of power, no matter how outrageous, is necessarily a federal crime,” he pointed out.
“Now, as to President Obama and Vice President Biden, whatever their level of involvement, based on the information I have today, I don’t expect Mr. Durham’s work will lead to a criminal investigation of either man,” he said at the time. “Our concern over potential criminality is focused on others.”
Though Obama and Biden were in power at the time, it seems unlikely that Durham will be able to pin anything on them. Still, this investigation has already uncovered the corruption and abuse of power employed to stop Trump.
