Prisoners across the country, especially in Democrat-led states, have had their sentences reduced or have even been fully released from prison over fears that COVID-19 outbreaks within prison systems could quickly spiral out of control.
But if you’re a convicted murderer under U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr’s watch, don’t count on a get-out-jail-free card anytime soon, because according to the Washington Examiner, Barr is ramping up orders of execution during the presidential transition period.
This week, in the face of fierce Democrat opposition, Barr sent orders to the Federal Bureau of Prisons to schedule the executions of three additional convicted murderers, marking a total of five death row inmates at the federal level which will be executed before Inauguration Day.
The additional three convicts who will soon meet their maker will be executed in Terre Haute, Indiana at a federal facility, with all scheduled to be executed by lethal injection.
Alfred Bourgeois, Cory Johnson and Dustin Higgs all have been convicted of atrocious crimes, decades ago, which led them to their scheduled executions. Most of the crimes include multiple, gruesome murders, including the killing of women and children.
Barr’s additional execution orders come in the wake of the AG reinstating the federal death penalty over the summer of 2020, a year after laying out guidelines for bringing capital punishment back to the federal level.
“The Justice Department upholds the rule of law — and we owe it to the victims and their families to carry forward the sentence imposed by our justice system,” Barr said last year, according to the Washington Examiner.
Democratic lawmakers pleaded with Barr in a recent letter to suspend any upcoming federal executions in order to allow the incoming administration to examine the cases and determine a course of action. Though he spent decades backing capital punishment, former Vice President Joe Biden ran against it in his recent presidential campaign.
Barr’s U.S. Department of Justice has, so far, not given consideration to the request from Democrats and apparently has zero concerns over what the incoming administration thinks of the situation.
