The Fiscal Year 2022 released on Friday would eliminate the longstanding amendment that previously kept taxpayers from funding abortions, according to Breitbart News.
The Hyde Amendment has bad extensive bipartisan support for decades, including from the president and former senator, in previous sessions of Congress.
Then-Sen. Biden wrote to a constituent in April of 1994, “Those of us who are opposed to abortion should not be compelled to pay for them.”
The amendment is still important to Americans, as was evidenced by a Knights of Columbus/Marist Poll released in January of this year which found 58 percent of likely voters opposed taxpayer-funded abortions.
The poll found that those who opposed tax dollars going toward aborting the unborn including 31 percent of Democrats, 83 percent of Republicans, and 65 percent of independents
Democrats in politics have, however, stood firmly behind abortion, making it a key issue for some time., including Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) who proclaimed the, “GREAT news,” on Twitter when it was found that the White House did not include the Hyde Amendment in its proposed budget:
The president “has become the first president in decades to remove the Hyde Amendment from the budget, helping advance our fight to end this racist & discriminatory policy once and for all,” Lee said.
Texas Right to Life director of media and communication Kimberlyn Schwartz responded to the news saying that, “For several decades, the Hyde Amendment has protected the consciences of Pro-Life Texans and saved thousands of preborn lives.
“Biden’s proposed budget, though unsurprising, is nevertheless dispiriting for the Pro-Life movement and all who care about the dignity of human Life. Federal legislators must work to oppose Biden’s efforts and work to include the Hyde Amendment in the federal budget.”
