Democrat nominee Joe Biden just made a major strategic decision that could backfire on his campaign in a major way.
As Democrat leaders all over the country cave to the pressure to begin the process of defunding law enforcement, Joe Biden was forced to take a position on the controversial issue, and it’s not likely to make the radical leftist contingent of the Democrat party happy.
According to a new campaign statement, Biden “does not believe that police should be defunded.”
Biden spokesperson Andrew Bates released a statement on Monday saying:
As his criminal justice proposal made clear months ago, Vice President Biden does not believe that police should be defunded. He hears and shares the deep grief and frustration of those calling out for change, and is driven to ensure that justice is done and that we put a stop to this terrible pain.
As both Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio both found out the hard way, calling for reform instead of abolition of the police is not good enough for the activists that have taken over the national conversation.
Biden’s campaign statement went on to clarify that Biden’s reform goals will “[fund] community policing programs that improve relationships between officers and residents, and provides the training that is needed to avert tragic, unjustifiable deaths. ”
Biden’s campaign may have decided that calling for reform and blaming the lack of progress on that front on the Trump administration, but it’s not likely that anti-police activists will accept his offering.
Trump campaign spokesperson Tim Murtaugh blasted the Biden statement, saying on Monday:
Biden doesn’t have the strength to stand up to extremists in his party calling for defunding and disbanding local police departments. Clearly he has been doing a political analysis & decided the safest thing is to answer through a mid-lever staffer. This is weakness personified.
