Prior to last week’s chaos at the Capitol building, the whole nation was in an uproar over the meager $600 checks authorized by Congress as part of the latest coronavirus relief deal.
Joe Biden promised prior to the Georgia runoff election in early January that he would push $2,000 relief checks once installed in the White House. On Thursday, Breitbart reported that Biden plans to publically reverse course and announce his backing of $1,400 checks.
Reuters first reported Thursday morning that Biden is set to shock D.C. by unveiling a $1.5 trillion COVID-19 relief package that includes $1,400 relief checks instead of the promised $2,000 payments.
The stimulus package has a price tag above $1.5 trillion and includes a commitment for $1,400 stimulus checks, according to a source familiar with the proposal, and Biden is expected to commit to partner with private companies to increase the number of Americans getting vaccinated.
Biden is set to make the official announcement during an address on Thursday evening — though his planned bombshell may be overshadowed by the continual Democrat fixation on pursuing revenge against outgoing President Trump.
$600 checks approved by Congress in December have already been distributed to most Americans, but bipartisan calls for an additional $2,000 per eligible American continued well into January.
Biden himself, along with a host of bipartisan lawmakers, led the charge, tweeting as recently as January 10 that “we need $2,000 stimulus checks.”
Biden’s VP-elect Kamala Harris also tweeted her explicit support for $2,000 checks on Tuesday, writing:
Food banks are strained trying to feed people worried about where they’ll get their next meal. Essential workers continue to risk their own health and their families for us all. Small business owners from restaurants to barber shops are hurting. We need $2,000 stimulus checks.
$2,000 checks have bipartisan support and with Democrats set to take control of the Senate in just weeks, little stands in the way of Biden fulfilling his promise. But of course, with a compliant media and attention still focused on Trump, Biden will not be held accountable for lying to his supporters or the American people about his intentions.
