Biden says Roe v. Wade makes United States ‘outlier’ in western countries despite many European nations that have outlawed abortion

President Joe Biden erroneously asserted that Friday’s Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade made the United States an “outlier” among western nations in the area of abortion rights.

According to a report by Fox News, however, there a large part of European nations have abortion laws similar to the regulations that rule in Republican-led state governments.

“With this decision, the conservative majority of the Supreme Court shows how extreme it is, how far removed they are from the majority of this country,” Biden said during a speech at the White House.

“They have made the United States an outlier among developed nations in the world. But this decision must not be the final word,” Biden went on to say, referencing the long-awaited decision that ruled on a Mississippi state law banning abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh said in his concurring opinion on Friday that states that forbid abortion cannot also make it unlawful to travel to another state to have an abortion.

In Poland, on the other hand, abortion is only legal in situations involving rape, incest, or when the mother’s life is in danger. Abortion treatments are often prohibited after 12 weeks in Ireland and Germany. Abortions are prohibited in Italy after 90 days, or slightly under 13 weeks. After 14 weeks, the technique was outlawed in France, Austria, and Spain.

“Upholding laws restricting abortion on demand after 20 weeks would situate the United States closer to the international mainstream, instead of leaving it as an outlying country with ultra-permissive abortion policies,” the Charlotte Lozier Institute, a pro-life group, stated in 2014.

North Korea, China, and Vietnam were mentioned in the report as countries where abortion is permitted after 20 weeks. According to a legal expert for the organization, the Center for Reproductive Rights believes that 12 nations now permit abortions up to 20 weeks. According to the National Health Service of the U.K., abortions are permitted up to 24 weeks into a pregnancy.

Additionally, according to Politifact, there are more than 20 nations with “flexible” rules that allow abortion procedures at 20 weeks or later in specific situations. For instance, Japan authorizes abortions after 22 weeks for socioeconomic reasons and the Czech Republic allows them after 20 weeks for mental health concerns.
