Biden promises U.S. will respond if Russia uses chemical weapons

President Joe Biden was reluctant to get tough with Russia prior to its invasion of Ukraine. However, his recent remarks indicate it will take more than economic sanctions to neutralize the threat.

Biden promised the U.S. “would respond” if Russian President Vladimir Putin used chemicals weapons, the Daily Wire reported. The president said this in response to a question from reporters Thursday.

Several NATO nation leaders, including Biden, had met in Brussels Thursday to discuss the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Ahead of that meeting, Biden said that Putin’s “back is against the wall and now he’s talking about new false flags he’s setting up including, asserting that we in America have biological as well as chemical weapons in Europe – simply not true. I guarantee you.”

However, Biden is now talking about the possibility of how harshly the U.S. would react to such an attack. “We would respond. We would respond if he uses it,” Biden said of chemical weapons.

“The nature of the response would depend on the nature of the use,” he added, though not giving specifics. The president would not say whether intelligence sources have actually confirmed that Putin would use chemical weapons.

However, NATO and the U.S. are preparing for all sorts of serious attacks including nuclear. The White House has assembled a specialized team to problem-solve if Putin escalates in such a way, according to The New York Times.

Dubbed the Tiger Team, they hold classified sessions and plan for several scenarios, including Russia’s invasion into additional territories and a large influx of European refugees. Should Putin go nuclear even with a “small” weapon, “all bets are off,” a senior official said.

Biden failed to deter the invasion when Putin began amassing troops at the Ukrainian border, insisting only on economic sanctions. Now that violence has broken out and Putin has made gestures toward the possibility of chemical or nuclear war, Biden has had to up the ante.
