Presumptive Democrat nominee Joe Biden and his running mate, Kamala Harris, trotted out their first policy statement at a press conference in Wilmington, Delaware, calling for a nationwide mask mandate.
Every single American should be wearing a mask when they’re outside for the next three months at a minimum. Every governor should mandate mandatory mask-wearing. Let’s institute a mask mandate nationwide starting immediately, and we will save lives… Protect your fellow citizens. Step up. Do the right thing. It’s not about your rights. It’s about your responsibilities as an American.
Harris took the stage and told her audience that they had just witnessed real leadership.
…That’s what real leadership looks like. We just witnessed real leadership, which is Joe Biden. As a nation, we should all be wearing a mask for the next three months because it will save lives.
No doubt, Biden-Harris and the DNC picked this mandate to emphasize the Democrat claim that President Trump isn’t doing enough to respond to the COVID-19 epidemic. They claimed that they would be better leaders, saving lives and implying we should all vote for them.
But Biden and Harris enjoy the position of critics, always complaining but never having to perform. It is easy to say how much better one’s own decisions will be when one doesn’t actually have to make good on the claim, and one enjoys the added bonus of an uncritical press.
On the other hand, President Trump does have to make decisions and act, and he is the constant target of both the Democrats and the mainstream media. If President Trump proposed a nationwide mask mandate, the Democrats and mainstream media would descend on him like a furious pack of wolves, accusing him of being a bullying dictator, overstepping his jurisdiction, and usurping state sovereignty. Blue state governors would huff about Trump infringing on their territory.
But President Trump is not a dictator. He has been encouraging mask-wearing in public, providing leadership without forcing a nationwide mandate. Governors of 34 states have imposed their own mask mandates, and the rest have not. The decision lies with the governors, and the president has been respectful of that.
The 10th amendment makes that plain:
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
The Biden/Harris nationwide mask mandate reveals something more ominous. It shows how willing the Democrats — if in power — are to use a health crisis or any crisis to trample roughshod over the 10th amendment, states rights, and individual rights to impose their will through national mandates. Right now, they are talking about nationwide mask mandates, but the Democrats have also repeatedly called for nationwide mail-in voting, nationwide gun control measures, nationwide vaccine mandates, and others. Slippery slope, anyone?
Many blue states already comply with Democrat demands, but a nationwide mandate would force red states to bow the knee to whatever the Democrats deem important. A Biden-Harris presidency, combined with a Democrat-controlled Congress would erase much, if not all, of the constitutional sovereignty states now enjoy.
