The endless stream of mixed messages from the Biden administration about the need for ongoing COVID-19 precautions continued apace last week, as President Joe Biden bafflingly explained that indoor mask-wearing remains “good policy,” even when everyone present has been vaccinated, as the Daily Caller reported.
While appearing at a press briefing on the April jobs report, a journalist questioned Biden about the perplexing practice, saying, “You walked out to the podium with your mask on . Why do you choose to wear a mask so often when you’re vaccinated and you’re around other people who are vaccinated?”
Biden replied, “Because I’m worried about you. No, it’s a joke,” adding, “When we’re inside, it’s still good policy to wear the mask,” as Fox News noted.
The president then remarked, “The problem is, lots of times I walk away from this podium, you notice, I forget to put my mask back on because I’m used to not wearing it outside.”
Friday’s appearance was not the first time Biden’s actions did not seem to match up with guidance promulgated by his own administration’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In April, the CDC informed the public that vaccinated individuals need not continue masking outdoors, unless in a crowded environment.
Even so, days after that guidance emerged, a top administration representative was queried by CNN’s Jake Tapper about Biden’s continued adherence to outdated information, evidenced by his masked appearances in various outdoor settings, as the Daily Caller noted.
During an appearance on State of the Union, Tapper asked administration adviser Anita Dunn about the president’s apparent unwillingness to adopt the more relaxed standard according to ABC News.
Dunn explained that she herself, like Biden, found that donning the mask even outdoors had simply become “such a matter of habit,” adding, “I think the president takes the CDC guidelines very seriously. And he’s always taken his role as sending a signal to follow the science very seriously as well.”
But, given that the CDC has emphatically declared masks to be unnecessary when vaccinated people are outdoors, it increasingly appears that he is in fact doing the opposite of following the science and creating unnecessary confusion and ambiguity in the process.
