Before his election, many worried President Joe Biden would be equivalent to a third term for former President Barack Obama. As it turns out, it may be even worse than that.
Biden is returning the Islamic Republic of Iran to its Obama-era status, the Daily Wire reported. Despite it being the largest state sponsor of terrorism, the new administration will lift sanctions on the nation and reinstate the nuclear deal Obama had brokered.
“We are prepared to take the steps necessary to return to compliance with the JCPOA, including by lifting sanctions that are inconsistent with the JCPOA,” Ned Price, State Department spokesman, reportedly told the press about the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. “I am not in a position here to give you chapter and verse on what those might be.”
The original deal was essentially meant to stop Iran from producing nuclear weapons by giving them permission to continue a nuclear power program if they promised to scale back their production of nuclear material, according to The Hill. If that sounds like the exact wrong thing to do, that’s because it is — and Iran routinely violated the agreement anyway.
Still, the Biden administration is looking to pick up the agreement again even as some of the restrictions have already sunsetted and while others have proved useless. This includes lifting sanctions on the country and getting rid of the only real leverage the U.S. had.
“The Biden Administration is repeating the mistakes of the Obama Administration,” Tim Morrison, who was on the National Security Council during former President Donald Trump’s administration, told the Daily Wire in February. “It’s making concessions to get nothing more than a meeting. The Iran deal was dangerously flawed in 2015. In 2021, with key provisions expired, it’s simply national security malpractice to return to that deal. The Trump Administration bequeathed Biden tremendous leverage over Iran—it must not squander it.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu railed against a return to the JCPOA for fears that it won’t stop a nuclear-armed Iran. “A nuclear agreement with Iran is again on the table, but history has taught us that agreements like this with extremist regimes are worth as much as garlic peel,” he said Wednesday. “To our best friends I say – an agreement with Iran which paves its way to nuclear weapons that threaten us with destruction – an agreement like this will not bind us.”
Iran has no interest in sticking to any agreement, and it certainly won’t have an incentive to do so without the sanctions. It’s bad enough the nation has to deal with Biden’s new policies that are terrible, but now it looks as though he is also recycling the failed policies implemented when he was vice president.
