Dr. Seuss has been added to President Joe Biden’s cancel culture hit list as the beloved children’s author is removed from “Read Across America Day.”
Following the presidential tradition of proclaiming March 2 “Read Across America Day,” President Biden omitted the traditionally-included Dr. Seuss. Previous Presidents Donald Trump and Barack Obama both included Dr. Seuss in their proclamations.
The event was founded by the National Education Association in 1998 to promote reading among children. Read Across America Day takes place on the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, the real name of Dr. Seuss.
The news follows the recent decision by Virginia’s Loudoun County Public Schools to drop Dr. Seuss from their celebration of the holiday. The alleged reason concerned racial undertones in the author’s children’s books.
Former First Lady Melania Trump had previously stated, “Dr. Seuss has brought so much joy, laughter and enchantment into children’s lives all around the globe for generations.” Her sentiment echos the attitude of most Americans.
So why the omission? It seems connected to a 2019 report called “The Cat is Out of the Bag: Orientalism, Anti-Blackness, and White Supremacy in Dr. Seuss’s Children’s Books,” alleging racism in multiple Dr. Seuss stories.
Now “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” is simply too much for kids to handle. At this rate, there may soon be nothing left for kids to read.
Even the most liberal commentators are finding it nearly impossible to keep up with who is supposedly on the cancel culture list. Dr. Seuss, Mr. Potato Head, The Muppets–where does it end?
The truth is that America is a land of freedom. Cancel culture is what needs to end. Until then, we’ll continue to face a ridiculous growing list much stranger than the contents of any Dr. Seuss book.
