Biden administration scrambling as Republicans move to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

President Joe Biden's administration has stood idly by during a burgeoning crisis at the southern border. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) is attempting to hold a key player in the administration accountable for the mess.

Jordan believes Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas "deserves" impeachment over failures to stop the historic deluge of illegal crossers at the border, the Washington Examiner reported. Republicans would be in a position to do so if they could retake the House in November.

Jordan is poised to become the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and made no bones about using that power, should he receive it. "Mayorkas deserves it," he told the Times.

"He's told us how many times the border is secure, and you almost want to say, like, 'What are you talking about?' There's not a rational person with an ounce of common sense who thinks the border is secure," Jordan continued.

"We don't really have a border anymore, and we've had a record number of millions of illegal migrants coming across, so he certainly deserves it, but that'll be a decision we make as a committee and one that we make as a conference," Jordan said. Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona has already received signatures from 30 GOP lawmakers on a resolution to remove Mayorkas.

Impeachment requires a simple majority to pass the House of Representatives, but Jordan isn't sure they're there yet. "I don't know, but I do think there is strong sentiment among House Republicans, particularly House Republicans on the Judiciary Committee, that Mayorkas has done an absolutely terrible job," he said when asked.

Even if the House moves to impeach, it isn't a slam dunk for removing an official. If passed in the House, it would move to the Senate for trial, which requires a two-thirds majority to obtain a conviction and removal.

The Democrats have been complacent as illegal immigrants flood the southern border. However, it remains to be seen whether a political solution to hold them accountable is forthcoming or if the country will have to wait until the 2024 presidential election.
