Biden administration Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland is reversing a policy that promotes fossil fuel development on federally owned lands according to Breitbart News — spelling terrible news for the US economy.
The move is said to be a step toward making climate change the top priority for the department the report stated.
President Joe Biden is working to reverse many Trump administration-era policies. However, this one could be one of the more devastating for the future independence of the United States if international relations become strained.
Former President Donald Trump enacted the policy in order to make the United States the world’s top oil producer in an effort to achieve energy independence.
The US was able to reach independence and cause a boom in the energy industry in a coup that has been long sought after for both aid in international relations and economic growth.
Thanks to the smart decision making on the part of the Trump administration, their initiative actually decreased greenhouse gas emissions in the process:
The Associated Press reported that “The orders revoke Trump-era directives that boosted coal, oil CL00, -0.63% and gas NG00, +1.13% leasing on federal lands and promoted what Trump called ‘energy dominance’ in the United States.
In defense of her decision, Haaland called the orders by her predecessors “inconsistent with the department’s commitment to protect public health; conserve land, water, and wildlife; and elevate science.”
In a statement the day before Haaland’s decision the American Petroleum Institute weighed in opposing fossil fuel development:
“Enacting these policies means only that we will likely import more oil and natural gas from countries with lower environmental standards and could revert back to coal for power generation, resulting in higher emissions domestically, precisely the opposite of the administration’s intended effect.”
