The White House is considering ending a Trump-era public health order that would end the practice of Border Patrol officers being able to quickly return illegal immigrant families to Mexico, according to a new Axios report.
The policy, known as Title 42, was implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic to keep large numbers of illegal immigrants from entering the country and further spreading the virus. The policy could now be ended by July 31.
The Axios report said, “Over the past four months, migrant adults have been expelled more than 350,000 times under the order.”
The Washington Post reported, “Of the 44,639 families apprehended in May, nearly 9,000 were expelled into Mexico while the majority were allowed to enter the country to pursue their immigration cases such as asylum.”
More than 180,000 illegal immigrants entered the nation in May. America is currently on pace for two million illegal immigrants by the end of 2021, a number larger than many U.S. states.
Even Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), whose district sits along the border, has expressed concern. He recently sent a letter to Vice President Kamala Harris, joining the call of many Republicans for her to visit the border in person.
The talk of ending another immigration policy will certainly lead to push back from conservatives. Many already see Biden’s immigration policies as a disaster, leading to the highest surge of illegal immigrants in more than 20 years and opening major security issues.
If anyone thought Biden was planning to back off on immigration, the new focus shows the idea is very unlikely. Instead, Biden seems focused on importing as many immigrants as possible, billing himself as the leader of the nation’s immigrants.
