The consequences of the chaotic U.S troop withdrawal and evacuation from Afghanistan last month appear to be coming home to roost, as reporting now suggests that a number of elderly men who left that country were accompanied by young girls they claimed were their brides, according to the New York Post, leading to accusations that the Biden administration is complicit in human trafficking.
As CBS News noted, federal authorities are currently probing these so-called “child bride” cases within the thousands of Afghans who made their way into the country over the past several weeks and who are now in U.S. custody, whether living stateside or in other locations around the world.
Sources revealed that a number of young girls and women who were included among the evacuees from Afghanistan have claimed that they were forced against their will to marry older men in order to be granted passage on flights out of the country and/or were sexually assaulted in the process of leaving .
CBS News quoted the Associated Press in saying that “multiple cases of minor females who were presented as ‘married’ to adult Afghan men, as well as polygamous families” were indeed found within the evacuee population sent to Fort McCoy in Wisconsin, and that while authorities were conducting investigations, it remained unclear how the matters would be handled, given that human trafficking is illegal on a federal level as well as in every state in the union.
Justifiably, the reports of these so-called child brides among those brought to the United States have led to shock and outrage among many, with Sen. Ted. Cruz (R-TX) among those quick to speak up on the issue.
According to the Daily Wire, Cruz lamented the “horrifying” reports, saying that federal officials under Biden’s direction “imposed arbitrary deadlines for political purposes. They rushed the evacuation to expedite moving tens of thousands of Afghans into the United States without thoroughly vetting them for security, health, and humanitarian concerns.”
Continuing his critique, Cruz added, “It was already clear [Biden’s] reckless decision threatened the security and health of Americans, from concerns over terrorism to evacuees testing positive for COVID-19. Today we learned that President Biden has also imported an acute human rights crisis into the United States.”
The Texas senator went on to explain in detail that the identification of child brides and polygamous families among those brought from Afghanistan may have been “a direct result of the Biden administration’s chaotic evacuation process, a process that has enabled and incentivized coercion and abuse to the point where Biden administration officials may well be complicit in child trafficking.”
Though Cruz added that “Every Biden-Harris official linked to this disgrace should and must be held accountable,” it remains to be seen whether the political will exists on both sides of the aisle to ensure that happens.
