Biden admin contemplates sending migrants to former terrorist prison in lieu of closing down border

A recent report indicates that the Biden administration is considering a proposal to house migrants at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, according to The Western Journal.

The publication cited two U.S. officials and an internal document. The White House National Security Council requested information from the Department of Homeland Security regarding the number of Haitian migrants apprehended at sea who would require the designation of a third country for them to reside in while they wait to be processed for entry into the U.S.

The Biden administration is considering Guantanamo Bay as a holding facility in the event that there are an excessive amount of Haitian migrants for a third nation.

High-security prison Guantanamo has housed some of the most brutal criminals, including terrorists responsible for the 9/11 attacks.

In the past, migrants from Haiti and Cuba were also housed at the facility. According to NBC, the Biden administration is considering using the base's Migrant Operations Center and expanding it to have 400 beds.

"The U.S. government always does contingency planning out of an abundance of caution, and for a wide range of potential scenarios," an NSC spokesperson added after NBC published its story.

"These contingencies for migration existed long before the Biden-Harris Administration," the spokesperson went on, adding that a decision hasn't been made and the number of Haitian migrants interdicted at sea has decreased.

When hundreds of Haitian migrants gathered under the international bridge in Del Rio, Texas, attempting to enter the United States, the Biden administration was forced to deal with a rise in their numbers that overflowed the Border Patrol's capabilities.

Millions of immigrants have tried to enter the country while Biden has been in office, many of them illegally.

"The United States remains committed to supporting the people of Haiti. We recently delivered Haitian government-purchased security equipment, including tactical and armored vehicles and supplies, that will assist the Haitian National Police in their fight against criminal actors inciting violence," a representative for the NSC told NBC.

According to NBC, gangs recently attempted to seize control of Haiti's government. Most recently, the groups tried to stop the country from getting fuel. An agency spokesman told NBC that DHS is keeping an eye on "the situation in Haiti and there are longstanding contingency plans ready in the event of a surge in sea migration."

"DHS components, including U.S. Border Patrol, Air and Marine Operations, and the United States Coast Guard, along with our federal partners, maintain a continual presence with air and sea assets in the Florida straits and in the Caribbean Sea, as part of a multi-layered approach to interdict migrants attempting to enter the U.S.," the representative added.
