Biden admin asks Supreme Court to hear Remain in Mexico policy case

President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice (DOJ) asked the Supreme Court on Wednesday to listen to arguments regarding plans to end the Trump-era Remain in Mexico policy.

The policy was implemented to make illegal immigrants remain in Mexico while awaiting an asylum hearing. Opponents call it harmful and unnecessary.

The move followed a decision earlier in December where the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected an appeal to stop the policy’s return.

Conservatives have blasted the president over the request.

“Instead of fighting to fix the border crisis, the Biden Administration is fighting to end the Trump-era “Remain in Mexico” policy, which prevents asylum seekers from entering our nation until they are officially granted asylum,” Arizona Republican Rep. Debbie Lesko wrote.

The court must now decide whether it will hear the case during its current term or not, revealing whether its conservative majority will have any influence in the current border crisis.
