The Justice Department is reportedly probing avenues with which to bring federal charges against far-left Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan for her refusal to control the so-called “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone” and the ensuing chaos in June.
Durkan repeatedly repudiated offers from Donald Trump to send in federal law enforcement officers to help control the shocking violence but also refused to allow city police to even reclaim their precinct that was overtaken by protesters in the autonomous zone.
Attorney General Bill Barr has had enough of Democrat mayors’ and governors’ refusal to take control of their own cities and streets and has reportedly asked the DOJ’s civil rights division to investigate whether Durkan could be liable for federal charges.
Barr has also reportedly tasked federal prosecutors with cracking down on rioters, asking them to consider charging rioters with sedition and insurrection against the federal government.
Durkan infamously responded to reports of looting, vigilante justice, and intimidation of CHAZ residents by downplaying concerns. Durkan said the zone had a “block party atmosphere” and that “we could have the Summer of Love” if the CHAZ was allowed to continue.
Durkan finally relented after a third shooting critically injured two more, allowing then-police chief Carmen Best to re-establish a police presence in the area, but the damage was done. Durkan’s decision to allow the takeover of an entire block of her city resulted in several deaths and untold damage and Bill Barr wants her to face consequences.
