Former White House strategist Steve Bannon has suggested a radical sequence of events that would make former President Donald Trump Speaker of the House, impeach President Joe Biden, resign and then run for president in 2024.
During his “War Room” broadcast on Wednesday, Bannon said, “That’s why I say, hey, Donald Trump should be elected the speaker of the House after [Republicans] have the sweeping victory in November ’22, at least for 100 days, take the gavel from Nancy Pelosi, gavel him in, start the impeachment process. In 100 days, punch out and go run for president of the United States in 2024.”
Though the House Speaker is not required to be a House member, every House Speaker has been a Congress member. When the idea of making Trump House Speaker arose earlier in the year, he quickly dismissed the idea.
Current House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy would more likely be selected as the House Speaker if Republicans take control of the House after the midterms.
Instead, Trump has supported select Republican candidates in efforts to regain power in the House and Senate. A GOP-controlled House has become a likely scenario as the 2022 midterm nears.
In the closely-contested Senate, just one seat flipped to Republicans could give the party new control. However, the battle will be difficult as the seats up for reelection in 2022 largely lie in strongly partisan locations.
After the midterms, Trump has often expressed interest in announcing a 2024 White House run. If so, he would face a rematch with Biden with new momentum, or possibly a battle with Vice President Kamala Harris.
Regardless of Bannon’s suggestions, Trump will unlikely seek a role in the House. He’ll more likely return for a presidential run to potentially serve as only the second president to hold two terms in office with a gap between them.
