Baltimore Ravens linebacker Jaylon Ferguson found dead at age 26

Young NFL players have been dying at an alarming rate. The most recent tragedy marks the fourth such death this year.

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Jaylon Ferguson has passed away at age 26, the Daily Wire reported. An investigation conducted by the Baltimore Police has determined that an accidental overdose likely caused Ferguson’s death.

The team announced Ferguson’s death Wednesday in a statement released on Twitter. “We are profoundly saddened by the tragic passing of Jaylon Ferguson,” the Ravens account tweeted.

“He was a kind, respectful young man with a big smile and infectious personality,” the post added. “We express our heartfelt condolences to Jaylon’s family and friends as we mourn a life lost much too soon.”

Safarrah Lawson, Ferguson’s sports agent, also released a statement expressing “great sadness” about his passing. “The family asks for your prayers and privacy during this trying time,” Lawson said.

Unfortunately, Ferguson is just the most recent in a string of NFL deaths in players under 40 years old. On June 1, former Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber was found dead in his apartment. There was no cause of death released for the 38-year-old, who had been struggling in recent years.

In May, 25-year-old Arizona Cardinals cornerback Jeff Gladney was killed in a car crash. According to the New York Post, Gladney had just purchased a home for his mother prior to his death in the fatal crash involving two vehicles.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins was struck and killed while crossing a Florida highway after exiting his vehicle in April. The 25-year-old reportedly had a .20 blood alcohol content and other drugs in his system when he was hit by a dump truck.

The sad fact is that these tragic deaths occurred in men who were in the prime of their lives. Not only did Ferguson’s family lose a loved one, but football fans everywhere lost out on a player with a promising career ahead of him.
