AZ Republican Gov. Doug Ducey signs massive border security funding bill

In response to President Joe Biden’s dereliction of duty and loss of control with regard to the nation’s southern border, Arizona Republican Gov. Doug Ducey last week signed legislation channeling $335 million in funds toward constructing barrier fencing of one type or another to help stem the tide of migrants flowing into his state, as the Washington Times reports.

The funding is part of a larger, $564 million border security funding bill that represents Arizona’s largest such expenditure in history, though the law itself does not specify details regarding location and logistics of the fencing yet to be erected.

In addition to the over $300 million earmarked for fencing, the package includes more than $200 million in funds for enforcement strategies to curb the migrant influx that has overwhelmed border communities since Biden took office.

Projects slated to receive money under the legislation include the construction of a new jail facility in Cochise County, funding for transportation, local sheriff’s offices, prosecutors, emergency operations and more.

A news release issued by Ducey’s office featured scathing criticism of the administration’s lack of leadership on the topic of illegal immigration, with the governor declaring, “Inaction by President Joe Biden has led to the worst border crisis in over 20 years.”

“I’ve been outspoken about the impact this crisis has on Arizonans, our communities and migrants,” Ducey continued, adding, “[w] e’ve taken numerous steps to help resolve the chaos, including deploying the Arizona National Guard, signing legislation to address human smuggling and transporting migrants on a voluntary basis to Washington, D.C.”

The legislation signed by Ducey was sponsored by Rep. John Kavanagh, who declared, “The number of migrant encounters has skyrocketed at our border, overwhelming law enforcement and the Border Patrol.”

“Thanks to the absent federal government, our border is in chaos and out of control. We need more support and physical barriers… . I’m grateful for Governor Ducey’s leadership to take action and secure the border,” he added.

Succinctly summarizing the situation as he sees it, Ducey explained in a letter accompanying the bill’s signing, “Arizona will not sit idly by as the Biden administration fails to do its job and safeguard our state and nation from the clear and present danger of an unsecure border,” and it is a good bet that he – and all other leaders who follow suit – will be applauded for it by an electorate that has had enough of the unmitigated lawlessness the president appears to welcome.
