Authors: Biden suspected Harris of actively undermining rivals during 2020 veepstakes

The process by which then-candidate Joe Biden vetted and selected his running mate during the 2020 presidential campaign is the topic of a new book in which the authors claim that the Oval Office hopeful harbored real suspicions that then-Sen. Kamala Harris was secretly working to sabotage those she believed were serious competitors for the vice-presidential nod, as the Washington Examiner reports.

In This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden, and the Battle for America’s Future, Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns of the New York Times revisited the onslaught of negative press coverage heaped upon some of those who were perceived at the time to be some of Harris’ strongest rivals for the number-two spot on the ticket with Biden.

Though the authors acknowledged that the national political vetting process is invariably an intense experience, the authors noted that things seemed to take on a new degree of rigor in 2020 when it came to certain contenders for the VP spot, whom, the authors suggested, appeared to be subjected to something “more deliberate, even targeted.”

The duo observed that the very harshest scrutiny appeared to be “aimed at all of the most formidable Black women under consideration, except for Kamala Harris.”

The writers further assert that it was well-known that Harris’ campaign team worked hard to produce and disseminate unflattering opposition research materials on others who were reportedly on Biden’s shortlist, with California Congresswoman Karen Bass (D) and former national security adviser Susan Rice among those who were singled out for especially harsh treatment.

“Even Joe Biden wondered aloud: Was Harris’ team driving this?” wrote Martin and Burns, adding that “Biden was startled by some of the intra-state factional attacks on Harris by her fellow Democrats, including members of the state’s large congressional delegation.”

What’s more, the clandestine scheming undertaken by Harris’ boosters was not limited to just generating negative press stories about her rivals, as it was also reported at the time by The Intercept that her own Wikipedia page, for instance, had undergone an avalanche of edits in the summer of 2020, meant to scrub certain aspects of her political and personal past thought to pose a threat to her prospects of becoming Biden’s VP.

Though editorial staff at Wikipedia ultimately caught on, and one editor, in particular, chided mysterious user “Bnguyen1114” for seeming to have “gone through a database of press releases from Harris’ office, cataloging every single one and adding it to the article,” the vice presidential wannabe’s minions were undeterred.

In the end, the unsavory tactics employed by Harris and her aides, unfortunately, paid real dividends, as close Biden adviser-turned-White House chief of staff Ron Klain was apparently unbothered by the stench of the scheming and helped pave the way for her to become the first female vice president in the nation’s history.
