Democrats are always trying to claim that the U.S. mistreats illegal immigrants. However, one accusation from Vice President Kamala Harris recently fell apart.
An audit found no wrongdoing on the part of Border Patrol when a woman gave birth while in custody last year, The Washington Times reported. Harris had made the claim while she was still a U.S. Senator running for the presidential Democratic primary.
A migrant from Guatemala claimed that she was forced to deliver her baby standing up “into her pants” on February 16, 2020. Harris seized on this claim, demanding an investigation into what she called an “utterly despicable” incident.
The inspector general’s report that was released Friday didn’t specify the incident, but the report “did not substantiate” claims of mistreatment of pregnant migrants. “In reviewing the circumstances surrounding the childbirth at the Chula Vista station, we found Border Patrol provided adequate medical assistance to the mother and her newborn and complied with applicable policies,” the report said.
The unnamed woman was taken into custody around 2:30 p.m. on the day she would deliver her baby, who by default would be born an American citizen. She arrived at the Border Patrol processing station at 3 p.m. but video footage showed her beginning to deliver her baby at 3:09 p.m.
Her baby was born at 3:17 p.m. with medics arriving just two minutes after. She and her newborn were taken to a local hospital and released two days later. She was forced to spend the night at the Border Patrol station to finish her processing but was released the next afternoon.
The only consistent issue uncovered was that women and their infants born at Border Patrol facilities are often forced to spend the night there after leaving the hospital to finish their immigration processing. While there’s no official account of how many times women give birth in custody, it’s common enough that new mothers have slept on cots with their babies on several occasions.
Like many of these leftist tales of woe from the border, Harris completely mischaracterized what had happened. Of course, as the border tzar, she now has the power to stop these supposed mistreatments — yet she’s done little about the border situation at all.
