Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) came out in support of AR Circuit Judge Tim Fox who ruled ruled against the state’s ban on mask mandates.
According to Breitbart News Hutchinson said he was pleased that the Pulaski county judge overturned the state legislature’s move to allow freedom of choice about masks.
The governor made his comments on Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation”when he was asked by host John Dickerson about why he signed the anti-mask mandate bill into law and then reversed his position.
Hutchinson said that he believes that “facts change” and “leaders have to adjust to the new facts” as they become “the reality of what you have to deal with,” in a cryptic answer to his 180-degree change.
“Whenever I signed that law cases were low. We were hoping that the whole thing was gone in terms of the virus, but it roared back with the Delta variant.
Dickerson picked up on Hutchinson’s interesting turn of phrase and pushed further, saing “When you say facts change, do you see something in the last few weeks, particularly with respect to those under 12 who are in hospitals who are getting COVID? Did you see and learn more about the way in which the Delta variant is affecting that specific part of your community?”
Hutchinson responded saying that the change has been in the transmissibility of the Delta variant which seems to be affecting more subsections of the population.
The Arkansas governor may well be doing what he believes is right for his state, but he is likely also nailing his own political coffin considering how many conservatives he is alienating and how popular his opposite, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, is with the American Republican.
