Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson announces he will oppose Donald Trump if he seeks nomination in 2024 presidential election

There are many constructive ways for Republicans to criticize former President Donald Trump. Siding with Democrats is not one of them, however.

Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson said he was “laying down the foundation” to oppose Trump if he runs for president in 2024, the Washington Examiner reported. Hutchinson cited findings from the partisan House Jan. 6 committee as his motivation.

The committee has been conducting its show trial to impugn the former president. Testimony has included outlandish claims about Trump’s behavior as his supporters stormed the Capitol that day.

Still, Hutchinson was apparently swayed by this testimony. “That’s not the behavior we want to see in a responsible president,” he said on “CBS Mornings” Friday. “I will not be supporting him for 2024.”

Hutchinson claimed it was time to “go in a different direction for our country, for my party,” he said. “I want to be a voice for commonsense conservatism, and we’ll see how that resonates.”

The Arkansas governor does not believe the committee has made a compelling criminal case, but noted that “the Justice Department is watching that, and we’ll see how that develops.” Somehow, Hutchinson thinks this is a winning strategy even as the committee has humiliated itself by calling a witness who seemed to fabricate a fantastical tale.

Former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony has been roundly mocked for claims that the president, who was 74 years old at the time, reached into the front of his chauffeured SUV to grab the steering wheel. Somehow, Asa Hutchinson still thought her testimony “came across with a great deal of credibility.”

The Arkansas governor has made a terrible miscalculation if he thinks any of this will play well to Republican voters. Even those wary of another Trump presidency cannot deny that the committee, its witnesses, and its findings are all partisan rubbish — and there’s no GOP voters who will pull the lever for a turncoat politician like Hutchinson.
