Arizona Republican lawmaker Joe Hart dead at 78

Former Arizona Republican state lawmaker Joe Hart died Sunday at the age of 78.

Arizona Republican Gov. Doug Ducey announced the former lawmaker's death, ordering the state's flags lowered to half-staff for Hart.

"Deeply saddened by the loss of Inspector Joe Hart. A pillar of state government, he was a dedicated advocate for the mining industry and played a critical role in overseeing the safety at Arizona's mines," Ducey wrote.

"A lifelong Kingman resident, Inspector Hart proudly served the people of Arizona for decades. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this time," he added.

Hart served as a member of the state's House from 1992 to 2001. His cause of death has not been revealed.

The lawmaker's passing has been marked by tributes from friends, family, and fellow lawmakers across Arizona and nationwide as many mourn the loss of a longtime American political leader.
