Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe found out the hard way last week what happens when the general population grows sick and tired — and desperate — amid an economic crisis not seen on the South Asian island in some 70 years.

According to Fox News, hundreds of thousands of Sri Lankans took part in protests, with thousands of them, or more, crashing through security and barricades to storm the residences of both the president and the prime minister of the country, demanding their resignation.

The tactics apparently were successful, as both men agreed to resign from their positions in order to help restore some sense of peace.

Fox News reported: “The country, consisting of about 22 million, is suffering from a severe foreign exchange shortage, which has limited essential imports of fuel, food and medicine. This shortage has pushed the island into its worst financial situation in 70 years.”

The president and prime minister were both escorted to safety before the horde of protesters crashed through the gates, according to law enforcement officials.

“To ensure the continuation of the Government including the safety of all citizens I accept the best recommendation of the Party Leaders today, to make way for an All-Party Government,” Wickremesinghe tweeted. “To facilitate this I will resign as Prime Minister.”

In June, the inflation rate in Sri Lanka hit a mind-bending 54.6%.
