A new analysis from the Daily Wire reveals that the crisis that has gripped the nation’s southern border during the first few months of President Joe Biden’s tenure has reached new depths, with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) data revealing more illegal alien apprehensions than during any other months in the agency’s history.
According to a statement from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, in May of this year agents had encounters with over 180,000 individuals attempting to enter the country along the Southwest Border, with single adults comprising the largest proportion of those seeking admission, an increase of 674% over data from the same time period last year.
Apprehensions have increased in each consecutive month Biden has been in office, a time in which he has taken decisive steps – largely through executive action – to reverse Trump-era immigration policies that had succeeded in bringing the numbers of illegal arrivals down in recent years.
Furthermore, as the Washington Examiner noted, over 38,000 children who crossed the U.S. southern border unaccompanied by a parent have subsequently been released into the nation’s interior since Biden’s inauguration, the highest tally of migrant youth handled in this manner at any prior point in American history.
Zach Parkinson, Republican National Committee research director, argued that the disastrous numbers were released by the Biden administration in a manner designed to attract the least media attention, writing on Twitter:
Biden Admin clearly trying to bury this. They chose to release this after hours while Biden is in the UK and White House press corps is operating on a different schedule. This also conveniently comes **after** Kamala Harris returned form Guatemala and Mexico City, so she couldn’t be asked about it on her trip.
Parkinson’s reference to Harris’ recent travels underscores the vice president’s ongoing refusal – despite having been tapped by the president to address to migrant surge – to visit the southern border or outline concrete policy steps to tackle the growing crisis. Instead, Harris has insisted that her focus will remain on the “root causes” of mass migration, including climate change, food insecurity, and economic upheaval in Central American nations.
Harris’ performance on the trip to Guatemala, which the New York Post reports left members of the Biden administration “quietly perplexed,” was fraught with awkwardness, given that while the vice president attempted to blame the migrant influx on things such as natural disasters and government instability in Central America, President Alejandro Giammattei asserted that Biden’s family reunification pledges and open-borders messaging are the key drivers of the problem.
In a statement released Wednesday, former President Donald Trump lamented the rapid undoing of his administration’s successes in securing the border, stating, according to the Daily Wire, “At no time in our Country’s history has anything so outrageous taken place,” adding, “In the history of our Country, it has never been more dangerous or worse. They do not have long to act as our Country is being destroyed!”
Given the staggering migrant apprehension numbers the Biden administration is so clearly eager to conceal, it is certainly difficult to disagree.
