Americans believe Democrats calling for Trump's tax returns should also release their own

A new survey revealed that a majority of Americans believe the Democrats calling for releasing former President Donald Trump's tax returns should have to publicize their own, Breitbart reported. Trump's tax returns were publicized Friday.

The survey, conducted by Rasmussen Reports, found that 63% of those asked approved of the House Ways and Means Committee's release of Trump's tax returns going back six years. The effort was spearheaded by Democrats on the committee.

Prior to the Christmas holiday, Democrats followed party lines and voted 24-16 to release the former president's tax returns. Now it seems a majority of those polled thought it was only fair they do the same.

"Republicans will take control of the House of Representatives next year. Should Republicans in Congress release the federal tax returns of the Democrats who voted to release Trump’s tax returns?" the survey posed.

The results were that 54% said "yes" while 31% said "no." The remaining 16% reported they were unsure.

Broken down among party affiliation, 63% of Republicans were in favor of the measure, while 53% of independents also wanted Democrats to be compelled to release their records. Predictably, only 45% of Democrats polled were in favor of it.

The response is a significant barometer for how the public perceives actions taken against Trump, who will make his third bid for the presidency in 2024. To him and his followers, this was yet another "witch hunt" against him.

"There is no legitimate legislative purpose for their action, and if you look at what they’ve done, it’s so sad for our country," Trump said, calling the move "unconstitutional" in his remarks Friday. "It’s nothing but another deranged political witch-hunt, which has been going on from the day I came down the escalator in Trump Tower," Trump said.

"The great USA divide will now grow far worse," Trump also told the media, according to the Epoch Times. "The radical, left Democrats have weaponized everything, but remember, that is a dangerous two-way street!" the former president warned.

"The ‘Trump’ tax returns once again show how proudly successful I have been and how I have been able to use depreciation and various other tax deductions as an incentive for creating thousands of jobs and magnificent structures and enterprises," the former president added. However, even with those revelations, the documents mostly landed with a thud all around.

In four of the last six years reviewed, Trump and his wife reported losses amid his multi-faceted portfolio. This is typical of savvy business owners who use the tax law as a way to offset any gains.

For instance, Trump's real estate holdings reported depreciation which is consistent with tax allowances for landowners. He also reported losses during the 2020 pandemic on his golf courses and real estate holdings that many other businesses also incurred.

However, Trump still paid out $1.8 million in taxes in that timeframe. Like many people of his stature, Trump used the tax code to his advantage through legal means, even if the mainstream media attempted to turn it into a scandal.

There's no doubt that Democrats have been doggedly pursuing Trump through every avenue available to them. It would only be fair to require them to do the same.
