After pausing attacks for weeks, Russia hits Kyiv with barrage of missiles

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began back in February, has taken a backseat to a number of other news items, but that’s changing, once again, as new attacks were reported over the weekend in the nation’s capital city.

According to the Washington Examiner, the city of Kyiv, which had already begun its return back to some sense of normalcy over the past several weeks, was the target of a new barrage of Russian missile strikes.ย

The Shevchenkivskyi district of Ukraine’s capital city took a direct hit from a number of Russian missiles on Sunday morning, marking the first record missile strikes in over three weeks.

Many observers believe that the sudden attack is a message from Vladimir Putin regarding the G7 talks that kicked off in Germany this weekend.

The Examiner noted: “News of the blasts first emerged through images and videos posted to social media showing smoke rising up from several buildings. Within minutes, local media began reporting that a total of four missiles had hit the historic district, which is home to numerous universities, restaurants, art galleries, and other attractions.”

“Ambulance crews and rescuers dispatched to the scene. More detailed information – later. Residents are being rescued and evacuated from two buildings,” Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said in a statement.

Russia had pulled its forces away from Kyiv in May after it failed to capture key cities, including the capital city, to return its focus on securing more cities on Ukraine’s eastern front.

However, some experts believe that the fresh barrage of missiles raining down on Kyiv this weekend could be the start of Putin’s second attempt to capture some of the nation’s most critical areas.
