Adam Schiff says Trump 'probably' suffering from 'mental health problem'

During a recent discussion of the supposed “key takeaways” from the House Select Committee's probe of the Jan. 6 Capitol unrest, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) suggested that while perhaps not the primary driver of Donald Trump's conduct in and around that fateful day, the former president “probably” has a “mental health problem,” as Breitbart reports.

Schiff's comments came during an appearance on MSNBC's All In hosted by Chris Hayes in which the two men reviewed what they believed to be the earth-shattering revelations of the Democrat-led panel, which wrapped up its business last week by issuing criminal referrals to the Justice Department.

Hayes began by remarking on what he called the “sheer implacability of the efforts to [overturn the 2020 election] supposedly unearthed by the committee, a development he believes undermine what had been an erroneous understanding on the part of the American people of what truly occurred in the wake of Biden's win.

“There was this really persistent sense” Hayes opined, that Trump's conduct was “essentially a temper tantrum” and that the then-president was, “in his kind of classically unregulated way, acting out.”

That “misperception,” according to Hayes, was mercifully “corrected by the committee's report,” which he contended established in painstaking detail how thoroughly and deliberately Trump acted to foment the unrest that ultimately took place.

Schiff enthusiastically concurred with Hayes' take, saying, “We've demonstrated just how culpable the former president was in every step of this scheme. You know, you're right.”

“There are some who would belittle his misconduct by saying, well, you know, he's acting like a petulant child, or he doesn't know any better. He's a nontraditional politician. This is just Trump being Trump,” Schiff continued.

“Well, you know, that might have worked in the very beginning when he was breaking down norm after norm. People maintained it either when he sought Russia's help in his first election and lied about it to cover up. They excuse it and said if it was Trump being Trump when he tried to extort President Zelensky by withdrawing military aid to get him, to help him smear his opponent in the next election” the California Democrat added.

Taking aim at Trump's supporters, Schiff said, “And even now, there is an attempt by some to minimize his incitement of a violent attack on our democracy and his persistent efforts for multiple lines of effort to overturn the election.”

Dismissing the argument that it was simply Trump's personality or disposition that prompted his conduct, Schiff asserted, “You can't excuse it by saying that he's, you know, an amateur, petulant child. You can't excuse it by saying that he has a mental health problem, although he probably does.”

Those who might take issue with Schiff's unqualified assessment of Trump's mental state would surely be quick to point out his own arguably unstable habit of repeatedly uttering outright fabrications on the public stage, which, as National Review pointed out last year, has been in evidence for years and gone “largely unchallenged by a fawning political media.”

Indeed, Schiff notoriously claimed over and over again that lawmakers had discovered a criminal conspiracy involving Trump related to the 2016 election and that he possessed what he called a “smoking gun” proving the same.

Despite those blockbuster claims, however, Schiff never provided any form of corroboration, though his insistence on Trump's guilt continued, a pattern some might suggest is indicative of mental instability of its own sort.

While it is true that the mainstream media largely swept Schiff's own behavior under the rug, it was at least recently called out by Twitter CEO Elon Musk, whom the congressman had taken to task over an alleged increase in hate speech on the social media platform in recent weeks. “Got any evidence of this? Or is it like Russia collusion,” Musk asked, putting Schiff firmly in his place as the shameless liar he is.
